Received Jesus
Bible study on receiving Jesus.

Jn. 1:12

People who have received Jesus are given the right to become children of God.

People who have received Jesus are the people who believe on His name.

"Receive" in John 1:12 means to receive "in order to obey him" (The New Thayer Greek-English Lexicon, 1983, p. 370). Also see Jn. 5:43; 12:48.

John uses the past tense ("received") denoting that a person is not given the right to become a child of God until after receiving Jesus in order to obey Him. People who have received Jesus in order to obey Him are saved because they have obeyed Him (Heb. 5:9; cf. Matt. 28:18).

Jn. 12:48.

People who receive Jesus must receive His words.

When we receive Jesus' word, we receive it in order to obey. We receive His words as the authority for our life (Col. 3:17).

We will be judged by Jesus' word (Jn. 12:48).

Heb. 5:9

We must obey Jesus to be saved.

Only the people who obey Jesus are given the right to become children of God.

Only the people who obey Jesus have received Him (cf. Jn. 12:48; 2 Jn. 1:9).

Jn. 13:20

To receive Jesus, we must receive the apostles (cf. Jn. 1:12).

To receive the apostles, we must obey the word of God which they wrote by inspiration of the Holy Spirit (cf. 1 Jn. 1:1-7; 2:3-6).
